Northern Georgia Continues to Attract Retirees
While metro Atlanta continues to lead the state of Georgia in population growth, Appalachian counties in rural northern Georgia are increasingly attracting retirees from out of state. Retirees seeking a lower cost of living and a more relaxed lifestyle drove net migration increases in retirement destination counties across northern Georgia between 2016 and 2017. While Georgia is one of the top ten destination states for retirees, both North Carolina and South Carolina still attract significantly more retirees relocating from other states. Many retirees-- seeking lower costs and proximity to family members in the Northeast and Midwest-- are relocating to northern Georgia from Florida. The population of metro Atlanta continues to grow rapidly, increasing by nearly 90,000 to 5.9 million in 2017.
