Average Lot Size for New Homes Reaches Lowest Level Recorded

The average lot size for a new home in Georgia and around the country in 2017 reached its smallest size since the Census Bureau started tracking median lot size in 1992. Lot sizes in newly built housing developments now average one fifth of an acre around the country, with the largest average lot sizes concentrated in the New England states due to local regulations designed to reduce density.

The footprint of the average new home, meanwhile, took up over 25 percent of the space on the building lot in 2017, compared to less than 14% of the available space on the average lot in the mid-1970s.
