Tariffs Worry New Home Builders

Although demand for new, single family homes remains strong across the United States, builder confidence in their ability to deliver affordable homes to the market slipped slightly in April. Market analysts believe that new tariffs of up to 24% on Canadian lumber, which will increase the cost of building new homes in the US, contributed to the dip in confidence. Some US lumber suppliers claim that Canadian lumber companies receive unfair subsidies from the Canadian government, and the tariffs are designed to 'even the playing field'. Late winter weather conditions in some parts of the country and a low availability of lots also added to builders' concerns.
